Sweet Tea and Hurricanes

This past week has been one of turmoil and destruction. It began with the passing of my mother after a yearlong struggle with cancer. Her body was destroyed though the process of cremation which I admit was hard for me. A woman larger than life reduced to a container of ashes seems impossible. Her spirit went on to be with her Savior, Jesus.

During this time our new RV, Sweet Tea, was parked a nearby campground between Thomson and Lincolnton, Georgia at the Raysville Campground. It is a beautiful and peaceful setting that provided much comfort to us during this time of mourning.

We were told sites numbers 2 and 3 are the only ones in the park with full hookups. We chose site number 2 because the setting was nicer. There are prettier settings but we needed the full hookups. It is a little remote…meaning that the nearest Wal-Mart is about ten miles away. It is very convenient to Strom Thurmond Lake with the campground having a boat landing attached. Right now the water levels are pretty low but the fishing in this part of the lake is excellent.

Later in the week, we had a hurricane barreling towards us and everyone evacuated the coast and headed this way. Hurricane Matthew was a monster size storm that had its full impact for our area on Saturday. The SAME day as my mom’s memorial service. She never did like to be the center of attention. This way everyone was focused on storm surges, rain gauges and wind gusts. Thankfully, the impact for the area was minimal but the coast was pretty hard hit. Sweet Tea did great, but I admit I did not like hearing those pine cones hit the roof of the RV like bombs during the night. I thought for sure that a tree was going to come crashing down on us from the wind and rain. We survived the storm, those of the weather and of life. Everything seems better when you are anchored in Jesus and He provides the steadying power for your life.

He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.

  1. This is beautiful, Amy. I’m so sorry that you have temporarily lost your beautiful mother. What a comfort it is to know that you will be reunited for all of eternity. I’ve thought about and prayed for you so much in the last few weeks. This is a beautiful tribute to your mom and your God.
